Queer Stories Now:
A Free After School Art Program for Queer Teens
About the Program:
Queer Stories Now is a FREE after school program for LGBTQ+ teens (ages 14-17) living in the City of Rochester. Students will explore identity, self expression, and queer history through learning the art of making zines. Over the course of 8 weeks students will research, design, print, and bind their own edition of risograph zines on whatever topic they choose. Queer Stories Now is a space for students to learn how to use the visual arts to build a community where their voice is heard!
Programming will be held at Rathaus Press, 50 Chestnut St, Rochester, NY 14604. The program runs from March 3rd to April 28th, with a celebration event on May 3rd. Additional Saturday meetings include field trips to Flower City Arts Center, Archivist Books, and the Memorial Art Gallery.
See calendar below for meeting dates and times.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and will close once all slots are full or on February 5th, whichever happens first.
Final application status will be given no later than Monday, February 10th.
FAQ:
-
A zine (pronounced zeen) is a homemade and self published work, usually a booklet. The word comes from “magazine” or “fanzine”. Zines can combine photography, text, drawings, collage, really anything you can think of! The key is that they can be reproduced and shared, making them a great outlet for self expression.
